Biography After immigrating to the United States in , Sven Lukin trained as an architect at the University of Pennsylvania. A meaningful encounter with University lecturer Louis Kahn caused him to pivot, transitioning into a career as a sculptor, painter, and printmaker.Lukin was born in Riga, Latvia, in 1934.
Sven Lukin was widely recognized at the time for his innovative painting-sculpture hybrids. He was one of five painters in The Shaped Canvas, the Guggenheim Museum exhibition curated by Lawrence Alloway, that helped define a key feature of s abstraction.
